By the way, it would not be a very strange thing for Russia to agree to assume the Turkish debt. Then England would become quieted at once, and the "blasted" Turks, you know, would lose her powerful ally. All this terrible excitement and alarm in England over the Turkish question amounts to this, viz: That Russia, in the event of subduing the Turks, would make her own terms as regards the treaty, and the Turkish debt, something enormous, and held entirely by Englishmen, would become as worthless as Confederate bonds. England's alarm emanates from this source.
