"Your packet was delivered soon after my arrival here; to the Rev. Dr. Carey, who was then engaged respecting some missionaries, who arrived a few days before in the ship Benjamin Franklin, capt. Wickes, from London. The government insist on capt. Wickes taking them back, and declare that he will not be permitted to clear his ship out without he takes them back. It will not be settled till the ship be ready for clearing out, and at present it is very doubtful, whether the captain will not be forced to comply in returning the missionaries he brought out with him. The government here is unfavorable to the preaching of the gospel, as their arbitrary power would of course then cease."
We understand from good authority, that the ship Benjamin Franklin had cleared out at Rotterdam for Serampore, and that the missionaries upon landing there became Danish subjects.
