LONDON, Aug. 26.

The Success has brought into Portsmouth two Merchants of Cherbourg, as Hostages for 15 or 18,000 l. that is left unpaid of the Ransom money for the town.

It is said an additional duty will be laid on all goods imported from Holland.

Aug. 29. We hear that large bounties will be given to persons that will go and reside at Cape-Breton.

Some Transports in the River are taking in warlike stores, and a great quantity of provisions for the use of our forces at Cape Breton, whither they are to repair with the utmost dispatch, convoy being appointed for them.

If credit may be given to some letters from France (which they do not seem to deserve) a Spanish fleet of 31 ships of the line and 12 frigates, is sailed to the Mediterranean. The Neapolitan squadron will soon, 'tis also pretended, put to sea; and 12 ships of the line and 3 frigates sent out from Toulon.

Monsieur de Contades, commander in chief of the French Army in Germany, has detached 15 battalions of infantry to reinforce the troops on their coast.

Sept. 1. The Fleet under Lord Howe sailed from Portland on Thursday.

The Russian Army consisted, they say, of 70,000 men, and that of count Dohna of only 30,000, but the King of Prussia was to join them with 20,000.

The Austrian Army was advancing to Saxony, and the army of prince Henry was drawing towards Dresden.

The trophies taken at Louisbourg were this day brought in procession from Kensington to St. Paul's.

The Austrians tell us, that Marshal Daun's army is 100,000, and the army of the empire 45,000, which last is drawing towards Saxony.

They write from the Hague, that Mr. Yorke had declared, that orders had been given to all the Ships and Privateers to stop, visit and seize all Dutch Ships bound to the French colonies, as the ministry had advice that they supplied them with provisions and stores. The army of the empire was before Pirna. Marshal Daun was at Zittau.

'Tis said the French would be obliged to quit Hesse for want of subsistence. The Prince de Soubise is appointed generalissimo of the French forces; M. de Contades, Marshal of France; and prince Xavier, a Lieutenant General.

The Lord Viscount Howe, who was shot near Crown Point, is succeeded in Title and Estate by Commodore Howe.

Sept. 2. We hear that a genteel pension is settled by this court on Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick, for the noble exertion of his Abilities in favour of the Protestant Religion and Liberties of Europe.
