Full Text

A Gentleman standing on Monday in the Mall was expressing his Sur-
prise, with a little Circle round him, at the Manner of making the Im-
provements in St. James’s Park. What are the Men about, says he;

they seem to be taking up a Spade of Earth in one Place to carry it to a

Distance, from whence they bring back another Shovel full in Return,

as if Providence had been all wrong, and had not placed a single Clod as

it should be; and I do not see any Design in all this! I’ll tell you, Sir,

cries an old Gentleman near him, you know we are all fond of changing

Sides, and if you will but have Patience you will find the Bird Cage

Walk brought over to the Mall, which, in its Turn, is to cross the

Canal to the Westminster Side; and I am informed the ingenious Artist

who is planning all these Improvements intends to place Buckingham

House upon the Parade, and to set Westminster Abbey at the End of the

Canal to hide Buckingham Gate.
