Family Tends Sea Light
For Three Generations
WASHINGTON
(AP)
If the United States happened to be a monarchy instead of a republic, C. A. Baker of New Bedford, Mass., certainly would be invested with the title of hereditary keeper of the light, or something equally distinctive.
He, his father before him, and his grandfather before his father, have been keepers of a single lighthouse station off the New Bedford harbor for 59 years in unbroken succession.
The first Baker took charge of the Clark Point light, lighthouse service records reveal, in 1872. He died in 1879, and was replaced by his son, A. C. Baker.
The lighthouse station underwent a change of name just before the present century began, but C. A. Baker was appointed in 1898 to assist his father in keeping the Butler Flats light burning, this being the new name.
In 1911 the second Baker died, and the third Baker stepped forward to his father's and grandfather's post.
