THE HUNGRY SOUL
Text: "Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled." - Matt. 5:6
Jesus changes the world by giving new hungers, new desires, new wants. Multitudinous and glamorous are the hungers and wants of the people of today.
The radio, the television, the newspapers, the magazines, are ceaselessly raising new hungers, new desires. The radio commercials daily multiply our hungers and desires.
Created and stimulated in the hearts of people are hungers and desires for autos, houses, radios, knowledge, and scores of material things. There has been stirred in the hearts of minority groups a hungering to be equal, to have what others have, to be what other men are. Unrest and discontent have entered China, India, Africa. People are not happy with mere bread.
People are crying to be fed, not with crumbs falling from rich men's tables, but with cake, ice cream, porter-house steak.
The darker races are hungering for an equal share of the things their labor has helped produce. They are not content with "pie in the sky .. pie bye and bye." But they are hungry for that pie now on the shores of this known world.
There is an unceasing cry for an abundant life. Men are hungering to live abundantly.
Men and women are hungering for righteousness, for fair play. The cry of the soul is a hungering cry for life. "Give life" and I love life and I want to live" are the choruses of the multitude. It all goes back as a mighty echo to the words of Jesus. Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be comforted."
It is the business of the church it is the business of each Christian to stimulate hungerings for righteousness. It is the Jesus Way.
Too many of us, and too often we have stimulated wrong hungerings in the hearts of the people.
The glittering, blinking animated signs on our streets and highways are signs of the times. Advertising has put in the hearts of our people, especially youth, false desires. The television, radio, the book shelves with their cheap novels of the "Blue Mud and Ditch Water" have stimulated damaging appetites.
Only in proportion as we stimulate a hungering and thirsting for righteousness, for Jesus and His Church, only as we make fashionable and popular Jesus and his righteousness, Jesus and His Love, will the world seek Jesus and His
