Sporting Events Will Highlight State-Wide August Attractions

The long, warm days of August will offer the yacht race enthusiast a number of regattas in the Narragansett Bay waters, and the Rhode Island serviceman can also observe Indian pow-wows, drag races, and championship golf and tennis.

On 15 Aug., the United States 12-meter yachts, "Nefertiti," "Columbia," "Weatherly," and "Easterner" resume their trial races to establish one of them as the defender of the renowned America's Cup against the Australian challenger, "Gretel."

Other coming yachting events include: the Narragansett Bay Regatta, 11-12 Aug.; Coles River Yacht Club Regatta, 18 Aug.; Tiverton Yacht Club Regatta, 19 Aug.; Midget Eliminations for the Narragansett Bay Championship among sailors under 14, 21 Aug.; and the Bristol and Barrington Yacht Club Regattas on 26 and 27 Aug., respectively.

Tennis

The All-Navy Tennis Tournament is slated for 7-12 Aug. Also, Newport's famed Casino, located on Bellevue Ave., will hold its Annual Invitation Tennis Tournament from 13 to 19 Aug.

The area golf schedule for August starts with the annual statewide Four-Ball Championship matches, 3-5 Aug., at the Agawam Hunt Club, East Providence. Rhode Island Junior Open Championships are planned for 6-10 Aug. at the Metacomet Golf Club, also in East Providence.

The Pawtucket Country Club will host the Rhode Island Open Championships, 13 and 14 Aug., and the Rhode Island Mixed Foursome matches are scheduled at the Rhode Island Country Club, Nyatt, 24-26 Aug.

Autos

A drag race will be held at the Naval Auxiliary Field, Charlestown on 5 Aug., and on the same day the Rolling Rhodians will hold their Annual Antique Auto rama and parade in Narragansett.

Traditional American Indian dancing and the solemn "Peace Pipe Ceremonies" may be observed at the American Indian Federation Pow-Wow set for 4 and 5 Aug., from noon to sunset, in Lafayette, R. I.
