"You are a Federal."
No argument was so potent years ago in the hands of bogus democratic leaders to keep the less intelligent of the party in subjection to party drill, as the accusation "you are getting to be a federal," when any voter dared to show a little manly independence. Whether the federalists of half a century ago were right or wrong, this much is certain, that a majority of the surviving leaders are now zealous democrats: Hence the N. H. Patriot dares not now use its stereotyped clap-trap about blue-light federalism. Why? Mr. Buchanan was till nearly forty a violent Federalist, and only left the party when it lost its ascendancy in Pennsylvania. In truth, the democratic party is to-day chiefly "officered" by men who were enemies—men who opposed democracy when that name had any worth or meaning. Look at last week in the U. S. Senate, when Robert Toombs, an aristocrat who regards the laboring white man as a menial no better than the plantation slaves, engineered the Lecompton fraud through that body, and every democrat had to do his bidding. Here in this State, such life-long opponents of Jacksonian Democracy as George Porter, Joseph Stanwood and Charles W. March, are to be the chosen champions of this bogus party in the coming legislature. No wonder the Patriot has ceased to assail federalism.
