FRIENDSHIPS VS. WARSHIPS
(Duluth Herald)
The Quakers, or Friends, have a very lovely religion which they practice, on the whole, pretty consistently. They take murder seriously, for instance, and so they will not fight in wars that would make them slay their neighbors and brothers; and surely that is Christianity.
They have a publication, the Friends' Intelligencer, which brings news of the followers of this faith, and which sets forth its ideas.
In the Friends' Intelligencer appears this sentiment, prominently displayed:
Build Friendships, not warships, for World Harmony.
The world has tried long enough to bring about right conditions by building warships and the like. Surely it is time for it to test the Quakers' formula, and try building friendships instead of battleships.
And fortunately, there never was a time when the world seemed more ready to try that. Lindbergh, though he is no Quaker, showed how pleasant it is to build friendships, and how easy if you really try it.
