their
second
attempt
at
their
proposed
flight
from
Seattle
to
Tokyo,
without
a
stop,
at
7:02
A.M.
this
morning,
headed
for
Fairbanks.
along
the
inland
route.
They
expected
to
make
Fairbanks
in
eleven
twelve
hours.

The
Ford
refueling
plane,

took off
immediately
after
their
arrival
to
give them 200
gallons
of
gas.

twenty
five minutes
after
their
appearance
over
Fairbanks,
the
first
refueling
contact
was
made
between
the
Lockheed
and
the
Ford,
and
fully
completed.
The
Ford
then
returned
to
the
ground
to
fill
her
tanks
with
700
gallons
of
gas.

ships
then
slowed
down
to 80 or
90 miles an
hour and the
refueling
of
the
"Fort
Worth"
continued.

exchanged

fair
weather

It

believed
here
that the fliers took the south
ern
route.

The
Fort
Worth
followed by the
refueler,
proceeded
toward
Unalakleet,
because
there
was
better
weather there than
at Nome.
Mattern, the pilot of the Ford,
said that one or more
contacts
would be made between
here and
Unalakleet,
transfering
another
200 gallons of gas.
The
planes
would then proceed outward from
Unalakleet and the refueler would
transfer the remainder ot the gas
load before returning to Unalakleet.
The weather bureau at Seattle
said indications were that the
fliers would have tail winds much
of the way
down the Siberian
coast and also along the Kurile
Islands. well toward, Tokyo.

here at 7:35 AM today.

Later-Robbins and Jones explained
that they had become separated
from the refueling plane in
the heavy fog on the lower Yukon.
No word was received until some time late concerning
the whereabouts of the refueling
ship with Mattern and Greener
aboard. but news
finally
came
that they landed at Ruby.
Robbins said
he circled over
Fairbanks for three hours waiting
for the Ford refueler to show up
and make contact
in order to
still make the nonstop flight
Both Robbins and Jones
were
terribly disappointed, because the
weather was reported to be good
at Unalakleet and they could have
completed
refueling.
The fliers
never reached there.
