A CARD TO "MANLIUS."
You will, I doubt not sir, be a little startled when I tell you, that, whilst the Editors of the Enquirer were penning their remarks on your communication in their paper of the 22nd instant, in which they say, in relation to the transactions of the Ball, "the letter of Dr. Watkins, exposes this part of Judge Williams' statement, and strips it of all its force," they were in possession, (and had been ten or twelve days,) of a communication, forwarded to them in consequence of, and immediately after the publication of the said letter in the Virginia Advocate, informing them and the public, that Dr. Watkins had, in the estimation of the people of this county (Albemarle) generally, forfeited all pretensions whatever to credibility, or the character of a gentleman: thus using his name, and his letter, for political effect, whilst holding in their hands, and withholding from the public, evidence of the entire worthlessness of both—transmitted to them by a responsible person, in his own proper name—a person who has never, as they were informed, mingled in the unhappy controversy which is now agitating the country to its center—who had no idea of criminating General Jackson, or defending Judge Williams, but who was reluctantly impelled, by a strict sense of duty, to caution his fellow-citizens at a distance against testimony not entitled to credibility.
Leaving the matter to yourself, and the people,
I am &c. &c.
