Middletown Youth Off To Contest

Ray Woodward, Middletown, will represent Delaware at the regional tractor operator's contest at the Virginia State Fair at Richmond Sept. 23, according to Sam Gwinn, state 4-H Club Leader.

Ray won the state contest for 4-H'ers at the Kent-Sussex Fair.

The state 4-H dairy judging team will also attend and compete in the dairy judging contests Sept. 22. Members of the team are: John Benson, Houston; Keith Carlisle, Greenwood; Gilbert Collins, Middletown; and Carol Harris, Newark.

There will be four parts to the tractor driving contest, Mr. Gwinn said, a written examination, and sections on safety, operation and belting.

Each winner in one of these phases will win $25 and the over-all winner will receive a trophy.

The awards are provided by the American Oil Company.

Ray Woodward has been in 4-H Club work for 10 years and has been president and vice-president of his Club. He lives on a dairy farm and has won awards for fitting and showing including a trip to Waterloo, Iowa, in 1953 representing Delaware at the National Dairy Show. In 1956 Ray won the Levy Court trophy for good by winning the Fitting and Showing contest for the third time.

The dairy judging team is made up of winners at the dairy judging contest at the Kent-Sussex Fair.

The dairy judging contest will consist of judging six classes of four animals each.

A cow and heifer class in each of three breeds will be judged.

The breeds will be Jersey, Guernsey and Holstein Friesian.

Representatives from ten states will participate in the various contests being held.
