THREE PLANES, 400 MEN FIGHT FOREST BLAZE

PORT ARTHUR, Ont. - With three scout airplanes zooming overhead, 400 men marched out into the western forests of Thunder Bay where fires burst forth again today, threatening this city.

Rain, which partially checked the blazes, stopped and smouldering embers were again whipped up by heavy winds.

At Ignace, Ont., where all the inhabitants of Dyment, Ont., are housed in the community hall, men and boys worked in 18-hour shifts to prevent further advance of the fire menace.

fires threatening life were under control in this section today after drenching rains had quenched the more dangerous blazes.

Hundreds of refugees made their way back to their homes in the areas of timber land laid waste by the flames. Many of the settlers found only desolation, the villages of Larson and Kelly, Ont., having been destroyed. The only known death was that of Paul Garten, forestry service aviator, whose plane crashed while he was scouting a fire near Allen water, Ont.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Swain fled their mink farm and ran the gauntlet of fire wrapped in water-soaked blankets. They reached a railroad and rode an abandoned gasoline "jigger" to Kelly. There they joined a section gang which brought them from the doomed town to a Fort William hospital.

The flames advanced close enough to Fort William to trap a party of 70 foresters.

They dived into a river to save their lives and remained in the chilling water for five hours.
