The Duello on the Peninsula
A REPORTED "AFFAIR OF HONOR" IN WORCESTER COUNTY—ONE OF THE DUELLISTS FALLS SERIOUSLY WOUNDED—HIS PARENTS UNAWARE OF THE AFFAIR, AND AN EFFORT TO COVER IT UP.

The Newtown (Worcester county, Md.) Record gives an account of a duel said to have taken place in that county last week, but does not condescend to give the names of the parties engaged in it. The Record says that two prominent young men of that town who were rivals in the "affections of a young lady, and to whom both of them have been paying attentions since June last, and were the best of friends up to a few weeks ago, when the young lady seemed to prefer the attentions of one of them, and it was rumored that she had consented to confer her hand and heart upon him. This led to a difficulty between the disappointed lover and his rival, followed by a challenge, and the parties and their friends left Newtown on Friday morning and proceeded to the Cross Roads. After the preliminary arrangements were made, the young men took their positions, and at the dropping of a handkerchief, the signal for firing, two simultaneous reports, and the challenging party fell, bleeding profusely from a wound in the region of the right lung. The challenged party, who escaped unhurt, accompanied by a friend, immediately drove to Snow Hill and proceeded to Philadelphia. The wounded man was taken to a farm house, where he is under medical treatment, and it is thought he may recover, but it is doubtful. His family believe him to be in Baltimore on business, as he left Newtown on Thursday afternoon avowing such intention, but returned to Newtown on Thursday night. The young lady said to move in the best circles, is rightly affected and is entirely ignorant of the hostile meeting, believing her admirers to be the best of friends.
