Two men, Joe and Burt Slater, who are uncle and nephew, were arrested last week at Emmett, charged with raping a girl of 14 years by the name of Clara Williams. The facts are, as near as The Tribune could learn, as follows:
The men have been staying in a shack on an island just above Emmett. The girl has been living at Knox, a small station in Boise county. Her father is dead and her mother left her to shift for herself. The girl came to Emmett, but could find no permanent home, when the Slaters met her and induced her to go to their abode and do their cooking for them. It was thus that they accomplished their hellish purpose. The circumstances are too revolting for publication. The preliminary hearing was before Justice Sinclair. The evidence was sufficient to bind them over to the district court. The elder was held for $1500 and the younger in the sum of $1000. Not being able to furnish the necessary bail they are now in jail. Sheriff Thorp and Deputy Payne brought them to Caldwell to await their trial in the district court. It is said that Burt Slater claimed to have been the coachman for Governor Adams of Colorado.
