Worse Than Horse Stealing
Says Columbus Judge
"My God," exclaimed the father of Frank Potter, aged 19, when he heard Judge Rogers in the Franklin county criminal court sentence the son to Mansfield Reformatory. The father from the rear of the court-room heard the judge say, "Mansfield," made the exclamation and hurried from the room.
Young Potter pleaded guilty to driving the automobile of W. E. Fairman without the owner's consent.
"The court does not look lightly upon the increasing practice of operating machines without the consent of the owners," Judge Rogers said. "The practice must be broken up. It is a more serious offense than the former practice of taking horses and buggies.
"A person can take an automobile and in a short time be beyond the jurisdiction of the state."
Other criminals sentenced to the reformatory by Judge Rogers upon their pleas of guilty were: Bernard A. Chapin, for larceny and Claude Baxter, alias D. C. Froser, taking without consent an automobile and driving with it to Utica.
