WASHINGTON, Feb. 9. (INS)- Senate probers today prepared "Were you a Communists?" questions for one time CIO publicity director, Len DeCaux and Mildred Price, former China aid council official.
The anti-subversives committee, headed by Sen. McCarran (D) Nev., summoned DeCaux and Miss Price to a closed door hearing Monday.
Meanwhile, the committee inquiring into whether Communists infiltrated the institute of Pacific relations and influenced U. S. foreign policy, got its fourth refusal from a witness to reply to the Communism query.
British born, 49-year-old Kathleen Barnes declined, on grounds of possible self-incrimination, to say whether she had ever been a Communist.
Others who have refused to say yes or no to the question were millionaire left-winger, Frederick Vanderbilt Field, IPR writer Lawrence K. Rosinger and Harriet Moore Gelfan, former IPR writer and trustee.
DeCaux, who was ousted from the CIO by President Philip Murray ray, was named as a Communist in committee testimony by Whittaker Chambers and Louis Budenz, both one time high ranking Communists.
Miss Price was listed as a Communist by Spy Queen Elizabeth Bentley, who declared Miss Price was designated Communist unit organizer for IPR personnel. Miss Bentley said the woman had contact through her work as executive secretary of the China Aid Council.
IPR Secretary, William L. Holland called Miss Bentley's charge "Preposterous." He pointed out that Miss Price never was employed by IPR, and declared that the China Aid Council which Miss Bentley called "Communist dominated" -was a patriotic organization.
Mrs. Barnes testified with a British accent and with a trying-to-be-helpful attitude. She is the former wife of Joseph Barnes whom one witness declared was named by a general in Russian military intelligence as one of "our people."
