We know of no other American living to-day who is the equal of Mr. Seymour at once in the learning, the reflection and the originality which he brings to the discussion of every subject he touches. * * * Mr. Seymour affords a remarkable instance of a man, who, after having filled very high public office and returned to private life, has exhibited extraordinary evidences of continued mental and moral growth. May he long live to flood the land with the mellow light shed from the autumn of a life rich in study and experience, and softened and brightened and refreshed by deep springs of patriotism and philanthropy.
The Sun of yesterday, talking of Ex-Governor Seymour, goes on after this fashion:
No other man in the country stands as high as he does to-day. If he would accept the nomination for Governor of this State, it would be useless for any one to run against him. No Democrat would think of opposing him for United States Senator, and if he could be persuaded to run as Democratic candidate for President his nomination would be a foregone conclusion.
