IKE URGES GOP CONGRESS TO PUSH PROGRAMS
WASHINGTON, D. C.-President Eisenhower called all citizens Monday to elect Republican Senators and Congressmen who will work effectively toward the fulfillment of his program.
In a strongly worded statement prepared for the Citizens for Eisenhower film "The Year of Big Decision" released today the President pointed out that Lincoln advised that we must not change horses in the middle of the stream.
The Lincoln Speech on June 9, 1864 "It is not best, gentlemen, to swap horses while crossing a stream"
The President stated In the election two years ago, our citizens showed their determination to have a government dedicated to high principle and to the accomplishment-over a four-year term-of a new program of progressive and vigorous action at home and abroad.
This program is midway in its progress toward enactment.
During the past two years, even though the Republican Party has held only a very slim majority in Congress the merit of its program has led to a high record of achievement.
All of us believe firmly in the two-party system. We know therefore that in order to fix responsibility definitely, our affairs operate best when the Executive and Legislative branches of our Government have the same political complexion.
"For this reason all of us who believe in the aims of this program should join together to elect Republican Senators and Congressmen who will work effectively with leaders of the Executive branch toward the fulfillment of that program".
