QUINCY'S RESOLUTIONS CONFIRMED!

On the 29th ult. the Hon. Mr. HOLMES submitted the following resolution for erasing from the Journals of the Senate of Massachusetts, Mr. Quincy's famous resolve of June last, relative to rejoicings for our naval victories. The subject was called up in the Senate on Saturday last, when an animated debate ensued, which eventuated in the rejection of the resolution to expunge by a vote of 20 to 8!

YEAS--Hon. Messrs. Dwight, Taft, Quincy, Thorndike, Perkins, Atherton, Lewis, Putnam, Holman, White, Stephens, Allen, Whiton, Strong, Brownell, Heath, Mitchell, Abbot, Richardson and Hooper.

NAYS--Hon. Messrs Folger, Moody, Reed, Moore, Holmes, Foster, Campbell, and Fuller.

We know, notwithstanding, that all moderate federalists, out of the Legislature, were opposed to Mr. Quincy's rejoicings, and wished them erased.

IN SENATE, Jan. 29, 1814--

WHEREAS, certain resolves were, on the 15th day of June, 1813, passed by this Senate, relating to the capture of H. B. M. ship Peacock, by the U. S. ship Hornet, commanded by the late gallant and patriotic Captain James Lawrence: and, whereas, among other things, it is Resolved, as the sense of the Senate of Massachusetts, that in a war like the present, waged without justifiable cause, and prosecuted in a manner which indicates that conquest & ambition are its real motives, it is not becoming moral and religious people to express any approbation of military or naval exploits, which are not immediately connected with the defence of our sea-coast and soil:

And, whereas resolves of approbation and thanks have been passed by both branches of this legislature to others of our naval heroes, who have exhibited courage and skill equal to that of the brave and ever to be lamented Captain James Lawrence and the Legislature of the United States have, without distinction of party, passed a similar vote in honor to the memory of the said Captain James Lawrence: And whereas the withholding the usual expressions of respect and approbation, in this particular case, may at some future period appear to allude to the unfortunate contest in which he was slain, and may be particularly wounding to his friends, and afflicting to his relations;--Therefore.

Resolved, that the resolve aforesaid of the fifteenth of June last, and the preamble thereof, be erased from the journals of this Senate.
