Full Text

My! but Chuckles was an excited Brownie when he rode down the road on his bicycle after he had escaped from the Cruel Brownies. Once he got away from them he felt perfectly safe. He knew those lazy fellows would never try to run after him when he was riding so quickly, but he hurried nevertheless, for he was most anxious to get home and tell Queen Loveliness the enemies' plans.

As he drew near the Good-Deed camp his little heart went thump! thump! thump! for of course he couldn't help but be proud of the way his trip had turned out. His dear queen had told him it was the first time she had sent a Good-Deed Brownie alone on a dangerous errand and it was because he had the only bicycle in the camp that she was sending him without companions. Now he was back safe and sound with much important information to give to her. No wonder his heart went thump! thump! thump!

The other Good-Deed Brownies were waiting at the edge of the field for him. They had worried about him, for they knew he would be in danger, and when they saw him riding down the road the orchard echoed with the heartiest cheers you ever did hear. My! but they were glad to see Chuckles was safe.

He jumped off his bicycle and the Brownies surrounded him, each one trying to shake his hand and congratulate him. Then Happiness stepped forward and said:

"Queen Loveliness is waiting on her throne for us to report if we saw you coming, Chuckles. You came so quickly we didn't have a chance to tell her, but she has worried so much you had better go to her right away."

That is what Chuckles wanted to do above all things, for he knew that now that the Cruel Brownies knew their plans and advance upon the camp very soon.

Brushing some of the dust off his coat, Chuckles walked up to the throne and bowing low to Queen Lovliness, said:

"Your Gracious Majesty. I have returned safely as you see, and I believe I have the information which you wished me to get," and then he told her all he had heard on the top of the hill.
