Full Text
The Marquis de la Fayette is indefatigable in establishing discipline in the army, and forming it in such a manner as to prove an effective barrier against any projected inroads of the Austrians or their allies. These incessant cares, however, are beginning to work a visible effect upon a constitution naturally strong, and a spirit replete, with enthusiasm for the welfare and final establishment of the rights of mankind. M. de la Fayette eats little, and carries an example of temperance almost to extravagance; little bread and water, with now and then a glass of light wine, affords the principal means of his subsistence. Sleepless nights and toilsome days are the lot of this active friend of mankind: and history will mark him out as one of those few extraordinary men, who are born for the human race--and not for themselves.--It is thought there will be an attack upon some of the enemy's posts in a short time. Their army is gathering strength, but upon a serious view of the matter, and the divisions like to take place on account of Poland, it is thought their operations will merely tend to prevent a revolt in the Austrian Low Countries.
