The Morehouse College debating team took first place in the Tri-State Tournament held on Friday, March 18, at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg.
Other schools participating in the tournament were Virginia State College, South Carolina State College, Arkansas State College, and North Carolina State College.
The subject for the tournament debate was, "Diplomatic Relations Between Communist China and the United States." The two teams reaching the finals were Arkansas State and Morehouse College. In the finals, it was the Morehouse negative team that won. It was composed of John Barber, junior, of Detroit, Michigan; and Charles Walton, junior, of Indianapolis, Indiana. They debated against the affirmative team of Arkansas State.
The Morehouse affirmative team consisted of John Barber (who debated both sides of the question in the tournament) and Samuel Allen, sophomore, of Richmond, Virginia.
