NEWPORT. March 11.

By Capt. Clark, who arrived here on the 6th Inst. from Fayall, we have the following Extract of a Letter from that Place, viz.

On the 24th of December, at 8 P. M. we had a violent Shock of an Earthquake, which continued half a Minute, and occasioned a general Consternation. This was attended with several small Shocks, which so greatly terrified the Inhabitants, that many exposed themselves in a miserable Condition, in the Streets. On the 24th of January, we had a very terrible Earthquake, or rather two, for the Space of a Minute: This entirely stagnated all Business; nothing to be Seen but Processions and Prayers. The Ignorant and Superstitious paraded an Image, because Tradition says, this Saint formerly performed Miracles; but the Exposing of it had not the desired Effect, many severe Shocks happening afterwards.
