Full Text
Attorney General West has written a letter, in which he says that there is nothing in the "visible admixture" act, passed by our late democratic Legislature, that gives the least color of authority to refuse the vote of a male person of 21 years, in whose blood the preponderance is of the white race. Its only effect is to subject negroes, those who have a preponderance of black blood, and unnaturalized foreigners, to a much severer penalty for voting than white, native illegal voters. As the Cincinnati Gazette remarks—"we see no cause for this, nor justice in it; but that is the whole extent of the act." Unnaturalized foreigners will, no doubt, thank the Democracy for classing them with negroes in this respect, and making their punishment for illegal voting much severer than is meted to other persons for the same act.
