ST. JOHN HONEYWOOD,
Of Washington county,
Author of the excellent Poem on President Washing-
ton's Resignation,
Who died at the age of 36, of an hereditary
gout, sincerely lamented by his worthy widow
and numerous friends, and universally 'ad-
mired by all who had the privilege of wit-
nessing his superior talents : He died a firm
believer in christianity-thereby augmenting
the catalogue of genius that have subscribed
to its truth,
" Such were the notes our much lov'd poet sung
" "Till death untimely op'd his tuneful tongue.'
THE mournful muse his monument shall raise
Who oft has charm'd us with his magic lays,
St. John alas! is dead-The ruthless dart
Of Death, fell tyrant! has transfix'd a heart
Too warm for this cold world-Wit, genius, sense,
Poetic powers, and manly eloquence,
Were thine, O Honeywood! All could not save,
His matchless merit from th' untimely grave-
His tuneful lyre is mute, his harp unstrung,
Useless, in this deserted mansion hung -
The humbler social virtues all were his,
Endearing cements of domestic bliss-
Frail form! with energy of soul combin'd,
A Pope in body, and a Pope in mind.
Oft in a careless mood he struck the lyre,
T' amuse his friends, who listen'd to admire—
But publish'd nought till Washington reign'd,
And made a subject worthy of his mind.
Who has not read our fam'd Deliverer's praise,
In grateful Honeywood's recording lays?
Who can peruse a line, without being fill'd
With trembling transport, the rapt senses thrill'd:
E'en Washington appears brave, more sage,
In the just mirror of his faithful page.
Nations unborn. shall crown our virtuous bard,
With endless glory, as a rich reward;-
E'en prattling infants learn to lisp his praise,
And round great George's laurels twine his bays.
