EDITORIAL
It is noted that work has been suspended on the remodeling of the Marine barracks in St. Thomas, part of which is to be used for offices and Assembly hall for the Virgin Legislature. Lack of funds is given as the cause, which is not surprising considering the way the majority group insisted on messing up the finances of the government at the regular session of the body.
It is recalled how jubilant members of the majority party in the Legislature were when Governor Gordon shortly after his arrival agreed to give them all the space they wanted in this building for offices and Assembly Hall. Either before or after that he had agreed to approve the expenditure of $62,500 for expenses of the legislature which had been denied them by Gov. Alexander.
The public was quickly told what a nice man Gov. Gordon is, and that he was destined to become the most popular governor the Virgin Islands ever had. Now the court cases we are hearing so much about have been planned to drive him out the island. Party adherents have been told by January 1957 he will be flying North never to return.
Why? What has he done so terribly bad that he must be driven out of office. All we know is that the trouble started when he declined to give the king pin of the group the position of Commissioner of Agriculture and Labor.
It is doubtful if all these controversial points in the Organic Act would have been taken up if he had not drawn the line as to how much public funds should go into the pockets of one group regardless of their ability. And well that he did for there is no end to their insatiable desires and demands.
Because of the chaotic condition which their attitude of rule or ruin has created the knife is at their own throats preventing them from enjoying the benefits of the remodeled building as soon as they had expected. Followers should begin to think how they are being used to ruin the entire community in addition to cutting their own throats.
