Trying to Run the House Elevator
Imprisoned Half Hour in Cage in Midnight Attempt to Operate Lift.
Forced to Shout for Help.
WASHINGTON. —Representative W. D. Upshaw, of Georgia, who does not drink a drop, confided to friends today that he and a fellow-prohibitionist, Dr. Elam Franklin, Dempsey, of Atlanta, secretary of the Methodist Educational Board, attempted to operate a house office building elevator late last night and as a result spent half an hour in the cage just under the roof.
Dr. Dempsey Shoots Car Skyward.
After attending the Anti-Saloon League convention the two dry leaders dropped into the office building to visit Mr. Upshaw's office. It was nearly midnight and the elevator man had gone home.
Dr. Dempsey gave the control lever a push and the car shot to the roof. There it remained with the door tightly closed until calls of Mr. Upshaw and his friend brought the office building attendants who knew something about operating elevators.
"If Hill Knew This," Says Upshaw.
"If John Phillip Hill knew this," said Mr. Upshaw as he gained his freedom, "he'd say it was caused by something."
Mr. Hill has frequently chided Mr. Upshaw for his views on prohibition.
