Ala.- (SNS)- Mighty Tennessee State, champions of the Mid-Western Conference, featuring All-American Bill Bass - sensational touchdown-maker, has been made the underdog in today's fifth revival of the Vulcan Bowl Game, against Texas College, runner-up for the title of the Southwestern Conference. The kick-off 2:30 p.m. Rickwood Field
Bet-makers discount three factors in putting their money down on Texas. All-American Bass and All-American Robert (Bulldog) Drummond, tackle, the decisive weight advantage of the Tigers and talent depth of the lean-starved Tennesseeans. Bass is the greatest backfield man in Negro football. Drummond of Birmingham is the best tackle produced in the south in decades. And to add local interest, there is Willis Leonard of Birmingham, a cool defensive end who will alternate at the vermilion mates today.
Little known here about the Steers who were not scouted by the Tigers and have released only the bare duality. Their backfield points to the speed of the team, the passing of Ray Lewis and the fact that Wiley College, national champions, barely beat them out for the Southwestern Conference Championship. Lewis, who is a triple-threat, has actually been a miracle man on the Steers' team all the year. The question is whether Tennessee's bulky line can hold him down.
Two Texas first-stringers are lost to the Steers through injury. Coach Durley announced on his arrival Sunday afternoon in Birmingham. Captain Leon Leonard end, was injured in the Wiley game and will be unable to start. Clarence White, quarterback is suffering from an ear injury and did not make the trip. The Steers brought along 29 players.
Coach Durley said that he would be counting on Joe Graves, Charlie Wells, Charles Mathis, R. J. Mitchell, Fred Meeks, Clifton Ozen, Billy Marcus, Lewis Sibley Smith and Robison.
