But, Mr. Editor, I have wonderfully digressed from my main object, in writing this essay, it was to attract the attention of the people of the Queen City of Iowa, to the procurement of a Fire Engine, to be in readiness to meet, if necessary, the devouring progress of the flames. We are as liable as others, to have our homes consumed by the awful element, and as our buildings are as yet principally of frame, the occurrence of a fire and high wind, might, in a twinkling leave us without a shelter wherein to lay our heads. My attention has been drawn to this subject by observing in your invaluable Herald an article taken from a St. Louis journal, describing an improved fire engine, of power, simplicity, cheapness and durability ; the inventor of which, if I mistake not, is a resident of the above city. Would it not be well for our citizens to look to this matter-to reflect seriously upon the feasibility; the importance of obtaining an Engine or the more secure portion of our homes and firesides! Remember the old adage, which says, a " stitch in time saves nine." The acquisition of a fire Engine, will add much to the value of your houses; your interests will be much enhanced by making provision for the destructive inroads of one of the most appalling afflictions that can visit you "like a thief in the night" and ere the rising of the morning sun, leave you deserted of your humble homestead! "A word to the wise is sufficient."
