County Advisory Board is Re-named

The Roosevelt County planning group met Wednesday in Wolf Point to strengthen their organization and plan for county development and educational activities for the coming year.

The constitution and by-laws were revised and adopted. The group which formerly called itself the Roosevelt County Advisory Council will now be called the Planning and Improvement Council of Roosevelt County.

An annual meeting of the group will be held on or shortly before December 15. Other meetings will be called as they are needed by the executive committee of the council. The executive committee is to consist of twelve members, four from each of the commissioner districts. These executive committee members were elected Wednesday for the coming year by caucuses of groups from the three districts.

Elected from district one were A. R. Appelgren, Joann Stensland, John Greenwood, John Sethre. District two elected Eugene Swank, Iva Trinder, Kenneth Lauridsen, and Norman Hollow. District three chose Rev. Ole Larsen, Irving Hoye, LaVern Picard, and Mrs. Curtis Halseide.

Officers for 1961 will include Eugene Swank, Poplar, president; A. R. Appelgren, Wolf Point, vice president; and Mrs. Curtis Halseide, Culbertson, secretary.

The purpose of the council shall be to plan for education and actions on problems of concern to the Roosevelt County people, with the assistance of organized groups and agencies. Education and organization assistance from the county extension staff will be expected.

Membership will be appointed by major interests and organizations of the county. Any county resident may join the council by attending the meetings. County commissioners, county extension staff and state legislators are automatically ex-officio members of the council.

All members of the council, by expressing their views on what they felt was important to the development of Roosevelt County, helped in forming the format of proposed projects for the coming year. Council members, and probably many non-council members, will be serving on committees during the year to work on these projects.

Some will be direct action to improve conditions in the county and some will be doing research to improve the business, social and education climate of the county and some will be to educate people of Roosevelt County so that they better understand the problems to be faced, thus simplifying the problems.

The proposed projects include industrial and agricultural development, tax studies, study of farm policy, youth needs, farm marketing problems, promote crafted Montana products, farm bookkeeping and management classes, improving educational facilities, civil defense, sanitation needs, adult education, coordination of county road planning.

The Council solicits the aid of individuals and organizations interested in Roosevelt County improvement to carry out these aims in 1961. Some of these projects have been before the council but are to be continued because of need of more action or because of continued demand. Some are new to the group.

In the work of the council, all projects are aimed at ways to improve Roosevelt County.

"How Can Roosevelt County Grow" was the subject of a panel discussion at the council meeting. Panelists were Skulason Moe, Poplar, Bob Penner, Wolf Point; Don Hunter, Culbertson, and John Simard, Bainville.
