Capture of an Escaped Convict

While the officers who were sent over to Bliss' plantation to arrest Ward charged with the shooting of Atkinson, on Thursday last, they accidentally got wind of the fact that Ward's brother, who was on the plantation, was an escaped convict. So they marched up to Mr. Ward's brother and told him the touching story they had heard of his life. Ward's brother looked diffident, but the officers said that although diffidence in the young, at all times, was becoming, if not absolutely angelic, it would scarcely weigh very heavy in his case. Furthermore, his coming to the city in homespun would not prevent his moving in the best society or sitting down at the first table of the government hotel, on Houston street, and that they saw no real necessity for his shaving before he started on his pleasure trip, for where he was likely to finally go there is the most perfect mechanism furnished for even shaving the hair off the head. Then Ward's brother, in the utmost humility, exclaimed, "Take me as I am," and they took him.
