Full Text
WE have received various Complaints of the irregular arrival, and of the frequent stoppage and loss of this paper. Among others, was a letter last evening from Baltimore. Our answer is that every single paper is regularly put into the post office. The fault does not lie with us. One or two parcels have been returned, where there was some defect in the package or address; and these papers have since been forwarded a second time. Improper conduct exists in the post office, we cannot help it. Citizens of America! Ye have framed a government for yourselves; and we have been libeled all over the continent for hinting that it was not ABSOLUTELY FAULTLESS. If you have brewed well, says the proverb, you will drink the better.
The federal post office has always abounded with abuses. You have set up a government over your heads, and you cannot help submitting to that sort of treatment, which in this, and all other instances, that government may choose to give you. If a man puts a chain about his neck, he must not complain of the weight of it.
