Full Text
We have certain accounts from Lurgan, in the county of Armagh, that Mr. William Miller, of that town, hath just completed a surprising Automaton, representing Time, in the person of an old Man, with a long beard, as large as the life, enclosed in a case, with a glass door and curtain before him; it stands in a room opposite to a common clock, and is so contrived, that when the index points the common hour, this Figure draws back the curtain, appearing to look about the room at the spectators, and then at the clock; after this he calls the hour with a voice as loud and articulate as any watchman in this city; besides which, at the hour of twelve, he pronounces, with a proper emphasis, the Lord's Prayer; at six o'clock he says, "O man, praise the Lord; to whom be glory, honour and dominion, for ever and ever, Amen;" and at nine he likewise utters, "Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty, glory to thy name;" all which is performed with a seemingly natural motion of eyes, lips, and muscles of the face, suitable to those several attitudes and expressions. We are told the ingenious author is quite disinterested, and though this extraordinary invention is the result of many years study, he hath no other view than to excite persons of a superior genius, to make farther improvement upon this plan, which hath been so long considered as impossible.
