An Officer Beats a Soldier to Death with His Fists.—The examination of Captain Henry M. Meinell, charged with homicide in the killing of a private soldier of his battery, named John Mullen, on the 28th of last month, was commenced in the Court of Criminal Correction yesterday. The facts of the homicide are briefly these:—Mullen had been fighting with a raw recruit, and the disturbance being reported to Captain Meinell, that officer sent an order to Mullen to come to his quarters.—Mullen refused to obey the order, and Captain Meinell, angered at the insubordination of the soldier, proceeded to the quarters of the offender, and struck him three blows with his fist, knocking him down at each blow, and killing him in a few minutes. General Sherman, on hearing of the homicide, reported the case to Coroner Spiegelhalter, and requested him to hold an inquest on the body.—St. Louis Democrat, April 6th.
