CHINA.
It is supposed that the number of Romish
missionaries now employed in China exceeds
fifty.

The London Missionary Society have eight
persons already well instructed in the Chinese
language, and they passed a resolution last win-
ter to raise their number to eighteen or twenty in
the course of two years. The American Board
have about six persons of the same description.
The Presbyterian Board have one or two.
These persons are exclusively Presbyterians;
whereas the General American Board supports
both Presbyterians and Independents.

The American Baptist Board have two mis-
sionaries, who have built chapels at Hong Kong.

The Anglo-Chinese College, founded by Dr.
Morrison, at Malacca, is in course of removal to
Hong Kong. It has yet scarcely risen beyond
the character of a school; but is now under the
conduct of an able master, Mr. Legge, of the
London Missionary Society, and will probably
rise rapidly.

The Morrison Education Society owns a
school, under the conduct of an American Inde-
pendent minister, and a library.

The Society for the Diffusion of Useful
Knowledge among the Chinese, printed several
works previous to the war, but has lately been
inactive.

The Medical Missionary Society provides
buildings, medicines and other necessaries for
the use of medical men sent to China by Mission-
ary Societies in England and the United States.
All these local institutions are supported chiefly
by residents in China.

The Bible and Religious Tract Societies of
England and the United States have also printed
and distributed portions of Scripture and Tracts
to a large amount.
