Full Text

OLD SAM HOUSTON.—It has been reported that this old war-horse, after opposing the Secessionists of Texas as long as there remained a prospect of defeating them, joined the rebels at last, giving them the benefit of his support and counsel, and denouncing the Federal Government with all the rancor of a Toombs or a Wigfall. Our readers will be gratified to learn that such is not the case. We had a conversation, yesterday, with a gentleman from Texas less than a month ago, and are informed that Houston is as loyal to the old flag as ever. He is residing on his farm near the battle-field of San Jacinto, nursing an old war-wound which is still troublesome, and praying for the restoration of the State to a happier rule. He uses crutches, and is no longer able to bear the rough brunt of battle, but his brave old heart still beats with love for the Union and its flag, and he is willing to give his life, when needed, to their protection and defense.—[S.
