SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - Stanley Tomczyk, 42, up for sentencing on an assault charge, heard the judge say "One year . . ." "I don't want to go to jail," he shouted as he leaped through a courtroom window Friday. He found himself on a balcony, facing another 30-foot leap to the ground. Tomczyk surrendered and was taken to a hospital for his cuts. There he learned the judge had spoken a few words he hadn't heard - "Sentence suspended." Now court officials are wondering who should pay for the window.
