A PROPOSITION.

Mr. Editor: It will be recollected that the Editor of the Charlestown Free Press, more familiarly known as the "Old Family Journal" and universally esteemed as such, by all its numerous readers, was the first to suggest the propriety of running an Opposition candidate in the 8th Congressional district, during the last canvass; and the first to propose the name of the chivalric Boteler, for that position. The result of that canvass demonstrated the wisdom and propriety of the suggestion and incontestably proved the wise foresight of the editor of that paper, and has reflected imperishable honor upon the district. I therefore propose, that a testimonial of our appreciation of the originator of the movement, by which this district has been redeemed and disenthralled, that the Opposition present to H. N. Gallaher, Esq., some token of regard for the invaluable services he has rendered to his party and as a tribute to his indomitable and untiring labors to assure the success of its candidate. If but one in every ten in the ranks of the Opposition, in the district, contributes a mite, a handsome testimonial, either in the form of a service of plate, or some other appropriate present can be secured for the purpose, and we hope the matter will be at once taken in hand—indeed we know that it needs but the suggestion—and consummated. It will be an honor most worthily bestowed and as worthily won.
