Full Text

Extract of a letter from a friend in London, to his correspondent in BRISTOL.

"You have no doubt read in the papers the apprehending of the Jews, &c. They were the most numerous and desperate gang of villains that ever infested this metropolis. I have often seen them pass by my door with their cutlasses under their arms, and was under the continual apprehensions of having my house plundered, as they were so numerous they feared nothing, but struck a terror to all the inhabitants near their haunts. Companies of them in open day would stop and rob, in the bye-lanes and alleys leading to Moorfields, every person for their purpose. But now, thank God, through the vigilance of Sir John Fielding and our magistrates, we are happily released from their depredations. — Three files of the guards, headed by the city marshal and a great number of constables, marched in battle array, and in open day secured the avenues. A great mob followed, and much bloodshed was expected; but the sight of the soldiers struck such a damp in them, that they were secured with much less resistance than was imagined they would be."
