"Who are them guys that just came in?" asked Peters-on
parole.
"The pardon board, the pardon board," said Secretary
Cole.
"What makes the warden grin so much?"said Peters-on
parole.
"He knows just what they're sure to do," said Secretary
Cole.
They're reprievin' Danny Deever, you can hear the
warden laugh;
The men are all 'round Danny now, to jolly him and
chaff;
They'll take him down to Phoenix, for they'll surely
find him daff.
They're reprievin' Danny Deever in the mornin'.
'What did he do, what did he do?" asked Peters-on
parole.
"Oh, he only killed his mother," said Secretary Cole.
"He only chopped her into bits, and shot his father, too.
"They's many fellers has done worse, they know as well
as you."
They're reprievin' Danny Deever, for they say he is
insane,
They claim his mind's affected, and he's really not to
blame,
They think his head was injured in a friendly checker
game.
They're reprievin' Danny Deever in the mornin'.
He never has been worth a darn," said Peters-on parole.
"He's helped a dozen men escape," said Secretary Cole.
'What makes the telephone ring so?" asked Peters-on-
parole,
"The governor is on the line," said Secretary Cole.
They're reprievin' Danny Deever, he will not hang
at all,
Though the people voted "hang him" a year ago last
fall,
But law enforcement on that scale don't suit George
Willie Paul,
He's strong for this reprievin' in the morning'.
'They have reprieved him thrice before," said Peters-on
parole.
They've got a wire from Washington," said Secretary
Cole;
"They've got a wire from Washington, not that they care
a dam,
But they're fearin' complications with the kingdom of
Siam."
They're reprievin' Danny Deever, you can stow that
coffin 'way;
The men are fillin' up his grave, they'll drink his
health today;
Tonight he'll lead the orchestra, we'll go and hear
him play,
They've reprieved our Danny Deever in the mornin'.
