Alexander, of Bulgaria, Forced to Give up
His Throne.
London, August 23.-Prince Alexander, of
Bulgaria, has been deprived of his throne by
the provisional government.
The news of Prince Alexander's deposition was received at the British foreign office yesterday afternoon. The Earl of Iddesleigh, foreign minister went during the evening to the office and dispatched messengers with the news to all cabinet ministers known to be in the city, and sent a special courier to the Marquis of Salisbury. There has been great activity at the foreign office to-day, and almost continuous telegraphic correspondence has been kept up with foreign capitals.
The ministerialists admit that the deposition of Prince Alexander is a matter of extreme gravity, but they say that even if it be proven that Russia instituted the movement, it will be difficult for England to interfere, because it is generally assumed that Austria and Germany acquiesced in Alexander's overthrow. The government has been reliably informed that Prince Alexander is safe and well in Roumania.
The Times commenting on the Bulgarian affair, says: "The coup must, we fear, be regarded, so far as Prince Alexander is concerned, as the end of the chapter for him. The general feeling will be one of respectful sympathy. He failed rather because he was too good for the work fortune had assigned him. The event must be regarded as a triumph of Russian diplomacy, and it is a very impressive event. It is also in a less degree a reverse for England's diplomacy. It is only too clear that the Marquis of Salisbury is confronted with all the dangers and difficulties in an aggravated form which he had to face on his first accession to power."
