They Never Look Ahead.

The cotton fields are beginning to draw largely upon the colored cooking capacity of this city, much to the inconvenience of our citizens; and it does no good to "kick."-Goldsboro Messenger.

Yes, the old saying "A nigger will be a nigger" is so true that a man of sense soon learns to take a philosophic view of the race, and treat them accordingly. Not one negro in a thousand knows the meaning of the word gratitude. You may treat a negro with all possible kindness, yet he will do less work, and betray you as quickly, as if you had given him kicks and curses at every step. An instance such as you mention occurred this week. Our office boy, Jim Dillard, a negro "preacher" so-called, to whom we had shown a great deal of kindness, paying him high wages for little work, and repeatedly submitting to great annoyances to allow him to attend his church duties, got a week's pay in advance, and then suddenly, early Monday morning brought a tale of important "engagement,"-which of course meant an offer of a dollar a day for a few weeks in somebody's cotton patch. This winter he and the like of him, will be around the streets with a "subscription paper"-begging for the "poor,"-meaning themselves.

It is high time the whites should learn that if a nigger is to act as a voter, and a Legislator, and claim the rights of citizenship he must cease to act the ape. There are colored people who live decently and act honorably. We could name five or ten of both sexes, within our own knowledge. But they are as one in ten thousand.
