Full Text

On Friday evening last the weather was exceedingly tempestuous in this city and environs. In the Sound, at East river, the sea was tremendous from south to east, shifting suddenly in squalls, and creating a mountainous sea. In this tempest a sloop from Gardner's Island, Zophar Smith, of this city master, was foundered, being off Plum Island: after having scudded before the hurricane for upwards of two hours, she was overpowered by the merciless waves, and beat to pieces, about nine o'clock, P. M. Mr. Smith his son, and Mr. William Post, who was a passenger, being the whole number on board, fastened themselves to the wreck as well as they could, the billows incessantly rolling over their heads--Smith and his son died on the wreck with cold and wet, about two at night, and fell off; Mr. Post alone survived, who was taken off the next morning, by a brig from New-London, Capt. Starr, fourteen hours after the foundering of the sloop.
