IS THE THEME
OF EVANGELIST
Those who heard Dr. E. E. Violette at the Christian church, last night considered his message one of the most interesting and illuminating they had heard. His subject was, "The End of the World" from Matthew 25th chapter. The sermon was a new view interpreting the scriptural references to the end of the world. He told how, in childhood, he heard a preacher tell with certainty that the world was to end on June 30th and how his faith was shaken when he saw the Barnum and Bailey show advertised for the first of July. He illustrated how new interest may be created in the Bible when the customs of the Arabs are known from which many beautiful figures of the Bible are taken. For instance, he said that the Arabs journey on donkey back and forth with a lighted candle fastened at night to each sandal thus illustrating the expression of David, "Thy Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
After quoting many scriptural passages on the judgment and the end of the world, from Matt. 25; John 12:48-50; Rev. 20:11-15, he said that these judgments have already taken place and are taking place every day. The man who is wrong now and rejects God's mercy and Christ's words are being judged now, and that in the end at the final judgment of God would be judged by the words of Christ they had heard and rejected, when righteousness will be preserved and ungodliness will be cast out. The evangelist stated that some who do wrong think that because some individuals here escape judgment that they need not think that because they are in the crowd they will escape the judgment of God.
"But the real Christian," said Dr. Violette, "will not be judged, 'for there is no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus,' says the divine writer. Death does not change the character, neither does death change the mercy and justice of God's plans."
Dr. Violette referred to Bruce Barton's statement that no thoughtful man today believed in hell to which he replied, "what do we care about what men say about hell and sin when we see the trail of woe constantly before us?"
Dr. Violette did not picture a literal hell of literal fire and brimstone but he said that the destruction and judgment meted out to men, and cities blotted out for violating God's laws were only a foretaste to what they might expect in the final judgment.
In discussing the second coming of Christ Dr. Violette said, "Christ has already come, is here now, but will come again."
Dr. Violette's subject at 11 a. m. will be, "The Charmed Life."
The evening subject, "The Man of To-morrow" Ps. 90.
At 3:30 p. m. he will deliver his great lecture on "The Evolution of Peace" on international relations.
