Last weekend. August 14th and 15th, gathered in Washington, D. C. a dedicated group of young men and women and veterans of the Armed Services to put the pressure on Congress to reconsider a Civil Rights Bill NOW.
These young people, many of them leaders of Southern "sit-in" demonstrations or Northern support movements, have learned early in life that political party platform time is also SHOWTIME for ambitious politicians. They know full well that campaign promises all too often are only used as devices to capture the hope of a believing people and these same Congressmen once elected forget the public promises of the common good and work instead for selfish interests. Yes. when it comes election time politicians can put on an academy-award winning "show" of promising to work for Civil Rights, better labor legislation, etc.. etc.
BUT, these young fighters for FREEDOM NOW have shown by their determination to keep the issue of human dignity for Negro Americans out in the open before election time that they fully understand a basic axiom of politics what you don't get out of a politician before he gets your vote you're not likely to get out of him after he gets elected.
They know, perhaps better than most politicians and perhaps even better than many of their elders, that as far as Civil Rights are concerned "showtime" is over its time for a showdown.
