Wilson Is Winning.
Chicago Iconoclast: President Wilson is winning. He has been President less than seven months and during this time has convinced the average citizen that he is not only on the square with the people, but a man of character, courage and conscience.
He is doing all that he promised to do and more. It is too early to judge the effect of some of the things, but Wilson is keeping the faith. He has met every reasonable expectation. Presbyterian though he be, Wilson refused to listen to the senseless protest filed against his private secretary by the Guardians of Bigotry.
Though a supporter of Bryan's grape juice diplomacy, Wilson refused to heed the fanatical prohibition outcry against the appointment of Charles Vopiska, a Chicago brewer, as minister to the Balkans.
On the question of tariff, Wilson occupies a middle position. In this he has shown much wisdom. You can depend upon him to stand pat.
In the matter of currency legislation he has been prompt, sane, wise, conservative and effective. The bill is not conservative, and it is not too radical. It goes far enough for the present.
When certain interests were crying for war in Mexico, President Wilson kept perfectly cool. It is well that he did. The jingoes do most of their fighting with their mouths. War is hell. In a game of diplomacy, hell should be the last resort.
The country is to be congratulated upon the election to the Presidency of Woodrow Wilson. He has ample time to make mistakes, but up till now he has made none that are worth mentioning.
