RHODE ISLAND.

From this State we have 'lots' of reports. The Providence Journal contains a letter from a Woonsocket correspondent, which states that great preparations are making in that portion of the State by the Suffrage party, to secure their rights at all hazards. He asserts that Governor Dorr intends to have his Legislature meet at Chepachet on the 4th July, the time to which they adjourned-that tents and implements of war had arrived from Boston, and the men were busily engaged in making cartridges, balls, &c. That a collision will take place between the two parties, of a very serious nature, unless there is something done at the present session of the Legislature, to extend the right of suffrage, there seemed to be no doubt. The Journal says:

'The powder-house of Dutee Greene, was broken open some time between Friday evening and Monday afternoon, and forty-eight kegs of gun-powder, containing twelve hundred pounds, were stolen therefrom. The building is of stone, with an iron door, and is of very great strength. The door was fastened by strong locks and massive bars and bolts. Four locks were broken by the thieves.'

The Express, has the following in relation to the assembling of the Suffrage party. That paper says: - 'The people see the necessity of an effort on their part, to put themselves into a posture of defence. An attack is meditated on them by armed forces of the government; and on their part, it is an act of prudence, an act of right to assume and maintain a defensive attitude. They have a right peaceably to assemble when and where they please, and they have a further right, guaranteed to them by the Constitution, to bear arms. Events which are daily transpiring teach them the importance of these rights, and with a spirit becoming that of their brave ancestors, they are arming themselves to resist the threatened attacks of a foe as unsparing and ferocious towards the victims of their wrath, as the red savage of the forest. These are some of the reasons, and sufficient to show why an oppressed people should organize into companies to resist oppression.'

The same paper has the following:

There was a large meeting of the Suffrage party on Saturday evening but not of the 'same character' as that at Diamond Hill Plain. The people met, without arms, to deliberate on certain subjects, at present, unknown to their Algerine oppressors. They had a legal right to assemble and so deliberate; and exercised the prudence to conceal the subjects of 'great pith and moment,' which occupied their attention from the spies and eaves droppers and common informers of the adversary. Such meetings are sifted as thoroughly as Satan desired to sift Peter. No tale bearers, nor renegades, nor mercenary Esaus, who would sell their birthright for a mess of pottage are admitted into meetings of those high souled men, who are working out their own salvation from the servilude, in a way that cause fear and trembling in the ranks of oppressors.
