From the Portsmouth (Mass.) Memorial.
MR. CLAY AND THE PRESIDENCY.
We regret to perceive that a concerted effort is making in different sections of the country, to bring forward Mr. Clay as the next Whig candidate for the Presidency. This movement is very ill-timed and premature, and can be of no service either to Mr. Clay or the Whig party. It is altogether too soon to agitate the nomination for the Presidency, before the present incumbent of that office has fairly entered upon the second year of his term, and it is certainly the part of prudence to wait the action of events, before the party is pledged to any Presidential candidate. The vigorous efforts which are already made in certain quarters, to bring Mr. Clay into the field, look like an attempt to forestall public opinion, and to force him upon the party under every contingency. The personal friends of Mr. Clay must, however, remember that the Whigs profess devotion to the interests of the country, and that the claims of any man, however great they may be, are of little moment in comparison with the advancement of those interests. The premature nomination of Mr. Clay in some quarters, has called forth from the Madisonian the following article.
