WASHINGTON—(ANP)— The Medical Society of Arlington County, Va., voted last week to eliminate racial barriers. At a meeting last Thursday members of the Arlington society approved a preliminary motion to delete from its bylaws a clause limiting membership to Caucasians.
The motion, however, is subject to final membership vote, but officers claim that there is little likelihood that the preliminary action will be reversed.
Dr. John B. Leary president of the county unit, claimed that the Arlington society's action was taken in line with the policy of the American Medical Association
which for the past several years has been the removal of racial barriers.
Under the new rule, membership to the Arlington society will be based solely on individual qualifications of the applicant, according to the president.
To date no such action has been taken by the Medical Society of the District of Columbia. However, Dr. William M. Ballinger, president of the Washington society
claims that a committee has been appointed to study the question in the District, and it is believed that some action will be taken in the near future.
